Changing Truth

The headline on the local news this morning said it all: “Catholics Rally to Accept Same-Sex Marriage.”  A group of Roman Catholics met to demand the Vatican change its view on homosexuality and allow same-sex marriage.

As an evangelical and fundamentalist Protestant, there are many areas where I disagree with the Roman Catholic Church.  One area where we do agree confessionally concerns the nature of marriage.  In every instance where marriage is described or discussed in the Bible, it is always between one man and one woman. Always.

I am shocked to learn that in the latest poll, 60% of American Roman Catholics and 40% of evangelicals support homosexual marriages (here).  This tells me that (1) American Christians are ignorant of the Bible or simply don’t care what it says; and (2) that American pastors are not preaching the full counsel of God’s Word (Acts 20:27)!

Government may create and sanction other types of relationships.  It may create a “civil union”, for example, but it cannot create a “marriage.”  Marriage is defined and ordained by God alone; and here’s the place where many people don’t understand: truth is not defined by people, but by God. The Church of Jesus Christ is not a democracy, it is a Theocracy.

The Church is created by God the Father, built and ruled by Jesus Christ, empowered by the presence of the Holy Spirit, and governed by the written Word of God. Truth doesn’t come from the opinions of men, it comes from God to man through the Bible. Man cannot change truth; when he does, it ceases to be truth … which makes it a lie.

Rally and petition, but when the Christians – or people who claim to be Christians – decide to oppose the clear teaching of the Bible, it is open rebellion against God Himself.

Jesus prayed, Sanctify them by Your truth, Your Word is truth (John 17:17).
