Waiting for a Woodpecker

Most weekdays I go to a local nature park and walk for about an hour. For the past 4 or 5 weeks there has been a group of people along the trail waiting with binoculars, cameras and video equipment trained on a dead tree. Rain or shine there’s been a small crowd teeming with a hushed exhilaration.

Yes, for over a month, people have been gathered to gaze at a dead tree. They’re not really looking at the tree, but a small hole near the top of the tree where they believe there is a nest of woodpecker chicks.

As I walked by today, I heard a woman talking with incredible enthusiasm about the impending revelation of the chicks from the hole; every eye and camera at the ready for the first glimpse.

Down the trail a bit farther was another woman hurrying along while talking with a young couple. “Just keep following this trail. You won’t be able to miss the crowd of people waiting! Any day the chicks will be there!”

I stopped and said to myself, “If only Christians were this excited about the soon Revelation of Jesus Christ for His Church.”

There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who eagerly wait – with neck outstretched and eyes bulging in anticipation – for His appearing (2 Timothy 4:8).
