Nearer than You Think

I sat in Dairy Queen, eating my banana cream pie ice cream Blizzard, watching the people around me. In one corner of the restaurant was a young couple. In the opposite corner an older couple. Behind me were two elderly men. Across the aisle a young boy with Down’s Syndrome and his “aunt.”  None spoke except for the two elderly men behind me. Everyone else sat in silence eating, staring at the floor, or looking at their food. The people at each table were separated by only a foot or two, yet the distance between them was light years.

People talk about God being “up there”, as if He is located in another galaxy. Others bemoan their feeling that God is far away and has left them alone.

For the child of God, made alive through the new birth in Jesus, those thoughts should never cross our minds. The Son of God took upon Himself human flesh to become our Immanuel – God with us (Matthew 1:23); but He is even closer than being with us: He is God within us!

that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith
(Ephesians 3:17).

  1. I’m surprised they weren’t on their “smart” phones.

It’s not uncommon for my wife and I to go somewhere to eat and not say much to each other. We’re comfortable with each other, and with silence, and don’t feel the need to fill each moment with conversation if we don’t have anything particular to say. We don’t pull out our technology and ignore each other however, as it seems many do.
