Atheism and Space

outer space

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world (Psalm 19:1-4).

Christians are often asked: If God created everything, why did He make an ever-expanding outer space? There are wonders of the cosmos, breathtaking and of indescribable beauty, which mankind has only recently been able to even detect. Why do these exist in the great expanse of the universe beyond our ability to see or enjoy?

Simply: to declare the power and majesty of the Creator. He created the universe to declare Himself.

So why, if the wonders of space point to the Creator, are there atheists? Ah! Again God speaks from the pages of the Bible.

Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that He’s made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that man is without excuse; although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, changing the glory of the unchangeable God into an image made like changeable man, and birds, and four-footed animals and creeping things … exchanging the truth of God for the lie, worshiping and serving the creature rather than the Creator (Romans 1:20-23, 25).

Atheism is the purposeful turning away from the God of Creation to worship the created.
