The God of All Comfort

How does the soul in turmoil receive comfort? How does the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3) bestow a feeling of relief from affliction?

Some people want an arm around the shoulder or a listening ear. Yes, these can be very comforting, but are they the means by which God bestows His divine comfort? We are very prone to think in temporary and physical terms rather than in spiritual and lasting terms.

For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope (Romans 15:4).

This isn’t to diminish the human aspect of comfort we gain in our troubles, but as the Christian learns the Scriptures, he opens himself to receive patience, comfort, and hope directly from God.
