A Stronghold in the Day of Trouble

Walls of Ancient Nineveh
City gate and walls of ancient Nineveh

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him (Nahum 1:7).

God’s judgment is real and powerful. No one and no thing is outside of His control. To His people, God is both good and a stronghold, a place of safe refuge from all danger and God’s own wrath.

In the days of the prophet Nahum, the walls of the ancient city of Nineveh were thought a barrier of safety, creating a stronghold from every enemy; but those walls were not a stronghold from God.

He alone is good (Luke 18:19) and as a good God, He works all things together for good toward His own people (Romans 8:28). Many people call themselves by His name, but it must be remembered that not all who call themselves by His name have been called by Him.  He knows those who trust in Him. We are unable to perfectly identify and distinguish the redeemed from the poser, but God knows the heart and what He has done within it.

The solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” (2 Timothy 2:19).
