Television talkshow mogul Larry King announced in 2011 his fear of death. Today he consumes various concoctions to prolong his life and hold off the Grim Reaper. He does have a plan, however, if he dies. If that day comes, King will have his body frozen until medical science discovers a cure for whatever kills King.
In a 2015 New York Times interview, King added that “at least if he knows he will be frozen he will die with a shred of hope … other people have no hope.”
King’s hope is temporal and iffy. It’s a cross-your-fingers wish. It’s for a continuation of this life in this world. Jesus promised something much more.
Jesus said, I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He [God in human flesh] you will die in your sins (John 8:24).
Death is the result of sin. It’s the penalty God warned Adam and Eve would happen if they disobeyed Him (Genesis 2:17). That same penalty has been passed on to every man, woman, and baby born since (Romans 5:12). Death is the inevitable punishment to all who sin. It is the source of all that is wrong in this world. It is the cause of death (Romans 6:23).
The only hope for eternal life is for sin’s power to die; Jesus said that is possible only through believing in Him. This is why Jesus went to the cross and died a death He did not warrant. He died that our sins might be put to death and His own life might become ours.
