I walked my wife out to her car to see her off for the work day. There, on the hood of her newly washed red car was a big gray splotch of bird … dropping. Plain as day! I opened the car door for her. She sat down and buckled herself in. “Oooooh! I don’t want that on my car.” I went into the house, got a warm glass of water and a wad of toilet paper and cleaned the dropping from her car. That made her happy and she was off to catch the highway.
We are like cars and the bird dropping is like sin. Sometimes the gift from the sky is big, other times it’s small and less noticeable. Either way, it’s still a bird dropping. Some people don’t care that it’s there, others figure it will wash off on it’s own, others, like my wife, are deeply concerned and want it removed immediately.
The glass of water is like the blood of Jesus – except with this amazing caveat. When we are born again, all of our sins – and the stains of our sins – are removed from us (Colossians 2:13; Revelation 1:5). Then it’s like God applies a special polish and wax that keeps the droppings from sticking to us (1 John 1:7). The droppings of our sin are real, but they are continually being washed away by the precious blood of the Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29). His blood keeps washing and washing and washing us.
