Elephants sleep only about 2 hours per day. Zoologists say that sloths spend about 75% of their lives asleep and dolphins apparently don’t sleep at all! Doctors suggest that the average person ought to have about 8 hours of sleep per night; that’s one-third of your day! For the average American, this means that you’ll sleep about 2,900 hours (or 121 days) per year.
That’s a lot of sleeping!
Yet we run the danger of too much sleep.
Some of us are spiritual sloths, asleep to the things of God. The Bible is dull and boring to us. We doze instead of pray. It’s easier to lay back and watch others serve God’s people. He is at work all around us yet we live in a dream world, made apathetic by our own sins.
And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light (Romans 13:11-12).
We all need a good night of rest, but it is time to wake up. Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you (Isaiah 60:1).
