Politicians and preachers are both able to appeal to the highest moral qualities in people, but it is much easier – and more profitable, appealing to the basest of man’s corrupt nature.
Politicians are saying: If your neighbor has something you don’t have, then the government must take it from him and redistribute it to others. They call it socialism, God calls it greed, covetousness, and envy.
Preachers are saying: If your neighbor has something you don’t have, decree that God’s going to give it to you. They call it faith, God describes it as pride, presumption, and tempting Him.
Crowds line up for justice without understanding that justice is getting what is deserved. What does man deserve as far as God is concerned? The wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23). That is the payment justice provides.
God reminds Christians that we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and damnation. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (First Timothy 6:7-10).
