The words were so hilarious in 1865, that the dialog of the play, “Our American Cousin”, stopped for the uproar of the crowd. It was at that moment that President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head. No one heard the gunshot through the laughter.
Today, those hilarious words are met with odd stares. What was funny when Archie Bunker said it in 1974 is now considered offensive. Jokes that made us laugh as children, like, “Why did the chicken cross the road?” only make our eyes roll as adults. Humor changes with time and experience.
One thing that is constant, however, is that A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones (Proverbs 17:22).
