Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine (Isaiah 43:1).
Numbers dehumanize. Numbers were how the Nazis turned people into a product to be inventoried and controlled.
Today, everything about us in America seems to be controlled by numbers. The doctor wants your Medical ID Number. The bank wants your account number. The store wants your PIN. Then there’s your Social Security Number, Passport Number, and your Driver License Number. We’re swimming in numbers so that we can’t conduct business without a stack of numbers anymore. It would be so much easier if there was just one number to identify each person. Oh, yeah …
Writing about a future one-world leader, the Bible says he will force all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name (Revelation 13:16-17).
In the ancient world a name was more than something to identify someone, it revealed his character. Names had meanings and each name was given to represent the totality of the person.
Man’s agenda assigns numbers, but God uses names. Names are important to God. Your name is important to God!
Man didn’t name God, but He revealed Himself and His character in His name, I AM (Exodus 3:13-14). God named Adam and Adam named the animals and the first woman according to their character (Genesis 2:19; 3:20). It’s all through the Bible. God deals in names. He calls His people by name and even changes their names as He changes their character (Genesis 17:5; 25:25-26; 32:27-28).
Revelation 2:17 promises that God gives to each of His children in Heaven a new name written, which no one knows except him who receives it. Your new name will reflect your God-given character. It’s not assigned at birth by a government agency to track and identify you, but a secret name between you and the God who changes you!
